Bendigo Show Specs
This year a new system of judging criteria was used at the Bendigo Show with a scoring system which tells the exhibitor her/his strengths and weaknesses from the judge's viewpoint.
Their system works as follows:
Rules: Check against schedule for conditions of entry, both general and class specific. Check for - correct class for item, wool content, weight for spinning, length for weaving, fibre for the class entered, labels and samples. Stewards check for notes and remove any identification.
Suitability: Is the item suitable for its purpose? Look at choices that have been made and if they are suitable. Was the fibre/yarn/technique used appropriate? Is the texture appropriate for use? Is the feel of the yarn/fabric suitable, eg soft, firm, prickly, rigid, fluffy as expected, etc? Is there drape or structure as needed?
Structure: Is there uniformity/ consistency/ symmetry throughout? Construction method: are the elements joined/ blended well/ securely? Look at the shapes of pieces. Are they the same size/ twist/ density/ stitch pattern overall? Is it structurally sound? Handle/s, armholes, buttonholes etc big enough? Cast off/ on too tight, loose, etc?
Finish: Has the item been well finished? Look for attention to detail. Blocking. Is the seaming method sound and well executed, appropriate and tidy? Surface - are the twists/ stitches/ embellishments clear? Finishing - are the ends/ fibres secure? Is the felting fully finished? Has the yarn been washed and tied with enough ties of the same yarn? Has the assembly been well thought out with joins/ seams? Are the selvedges neat?
Presentation: Is the item pleasing, useable with a well thought out and executed design? Neatness, consistency of colour throughout - one dye lot. Look at the design for balance, cleanliness, discolouration, wear marks, pilling, etc. Are the stitches/ components neat and well formes. Too heavy/ light?
X Factor: Overall impress or impact. Stand out features.
