Rare Breeds Spinning Challenge

Sasha Torres, of the Spin Doctor podcast, issued a challenge to spinners to try to source and spin fleece from rare breeds. She started the competition at the beginning of the year after she attended a workshop that introduced her to many breeds of sheep that she hadn't spun before.

She set up a thread on her Ravelry group, who took up the challenge and have been spinning away, posting photographs of their yarn, discussing sources of rare fleece and encouraging each other.

The deadline was the end of June and results are being collated. Some individuals managed to get a lot of samples done (one person did 39) while others have acquired a lot of small packets of bits of fleece that they will get to in the fullness of time.

The different breeds were assigned different points depending on how rare they are. The winners have still to be determined but all agree that it was a very well worthwhile project that will continue to enrich their spinning.
