As part of the celebrations of Canberra’s centenary, the Textiles Workshop at the ANU School of Art is working with members of the Canberra community and tapestry artists from all over the world, to weave a large scale tapestry designed by ACT textile artist Annie Trevillian.

As well as the main community tapestry which is being woven in Canberra, there is an opportunity for individuals or groups to weave tapestries and send to then Canberra to be exhibited with the Centenary Tapestry in the Legislative Assembly for the ACT Gallery. These tapestries will be returned to their makers and will commemorate the Centenary in personal collections across the country/world.

The small tapestries can be designed by individual designer/weavers or worked from images from our image bank (credit to be given to the designer) and made by individuals or groups, who want to be involved and contribute to the centenary tapestry project. In this way the project will represent multiple views of Canberra and what the city means to many people.

  1. Start your research on Canberra, its history, physical environment, population, purpose.. any aspect of Canberra in its 100 years that you like to consider. See www.canberra100.com.au for inspiration.

  2. Design your own tapestry. You are welcome to send this to Dan for comments or to ask a question about your design if you are stuck, daniel.edwards@anu.edu.au. Or if you would like to use an image from the image bank we can send you a picture to interpret in your own way, giving credit whenever you show the finished tapestry to the source of the original image. Designer Annie Trevillian is also happy for people to interpret parts of her design in the smaller tapestries. Her only requirement is that her design be acknowledged when the work is shown.

  3. Register the tapestry with us for the exhibition by e-mailing daniel.edwards@anu.edu.au.

  4. Send your completed tapestry with your name, address and title plus price if for sale on the back to: Dan Edwards, Textiles, Australian National University, School Of Art, Building 105, Acton, Canberra, 0200, 6125 5833 by Friday, 8 November.

The exhibition at the Legislative Assembly of the ACT will run from 22 November to 9 December.
