Two-day course

Learn how to make an elegant, soft felted hat that will hold its shape and is light and lovely to wear. From one basic shape, mould a felted hat with the option of many different styles. Using the ‘double brim’ technique, make a felted hat not requiring brim wire, stiffening agents, inner lining or sewing. Your stylish hat can be exotic ‘race day’ wear or lovely casual day wear – you decide. Equipment 80 cm x 80 cm bubble wrap or synthetic material, accommodating rush mat, pool noodle, wool-friendly soap, 3 – 4 old towels, small bucket or large bowl, watering pear or equivalent, hand felting tools Materials Pre-made hat block, 100 – 150 grams 17 – 20-micron merino wool roving, dessert spoon, bread/butter knife, 10 – 12 sturdy dressmaking pins (’T’ or ‘Wig’ pins if possible), small hammer, soft dressmaker’s tape measure pen, paper, permanent marking pen, 45 – 50 cm length of very wide elastic, scissors, 2 lengths of 80 x 80 cm ‘non-stretch’ netting/yule or very lightweight synthetic material. Optional – silk fibre, interesting yarns for embellishments
